ANN ARBOR, MI – A man accused of slashing multiple tires on cars parked behind an Ann Arbor business and attacking a woman is heading back to the lower court due to a court error.

The case against Javon Trevail Williams was remanded back to the 15th District Court, June 1, after it was found an added count of assault with intent to murder was not included in his court filings when the case was submitted to the Washtenaw County Trial Court, records show.

Williams, 29, waived his preliminary examination May 9 on six felony counts but, due to "a series of unfortunate events," his additional count was omitted in the court records, requiring it to be returned to the lower court for preliminary examination, according to court records.

Currently he is charged with one count each of assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, wearing body armor during the commission of a violent felony, assault with a dangerous weapon, malicious destruction of property and resisting police.

The case was initially delayed as Williams was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation at the state-run Center for Forensic Psychiatry to determine if he was fit to stand trial, court records show.

The case moved forward after doctors made their determination he was competent to stand trial, though there is currently a order for him to stay at the center to determine criminal responsibility.

No court dates have been publicly posted yet.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred Oct. 25, in the 200 block of S. State Street in downtown Ann Arbor where a business owner reported being attacked by a man armed with a knife while parking her car, according to the Ann Arbor Police Department.

The victim reported that at 8:17 a.m. she was parking her car behind Sava's on S. State Street when she noticed a man crouching down by her tire attempting to slash the tire, police said.

She rolled down her window to ask the man what he was doing when he rushed her vehicle, grabbed the window and broke it while slashing at the woman with a knife, police said.

A nearby construction worker saw the commotion and ran over to the vehicle and scared off the suspect, police said.

Patrol officers found Williams wearing body armor in the 200 block of Washington Street and arrested him after a brief struggle, police said.

While on the way to the Washtenaw County Jail, Williams became combative inside the police cruiser and ended up damaging the patrol vehicle, kicking out the back window, police said.

Williams is suspected of slashing tires on several other vehicles on S. State Street and Washington Street reported on Oct. 8 and Oct. 11, police said.

Williams was on probation for a misdemeanor assault and battery case, court records show.

He remains lodged in the Washtenaw County Jail with bond set at $150,000.
